Summary
Mathematical modelling and numerical simulation are now being used not only in all engineering disciplines, but also in medicine, biology, graphic arts, and even social sciences and humanities. These broadening horizons are creating strong demand for highly qualified personnel who are capable not only of using sophisticated, high-technology software tools but, even better, of innovating with these tools and continuing to improve them.
During the first two phases of the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in High Performance Scientific Computing, we developed many original numerical finite- element methods that can be used in numerous industries. Thus, two new industry partners, Bodycad and Hydro-Québec, joined our longstanding partner, Michelin. To better reflect our current scientific activities and the expansion of our fields of interest, we are proposing the following new name for the Chair: the NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Mathematical Modelling and Multiphysical Numerical Simulation.
Here are the subjects that we will study during the second renewal period: adaptation of anisotropic meshes; problems of frictional contact; fluid/structure interactions; form optimization; sensitivity computation; materials forming; and turbulent flows. We will apply the knowledge and expertise acquired in the preceding phases to make our models more complex and increasingly multiphysical, to optimize the formulations, to control precision and to accelerate the creation of algorithms, so that our partners, as well as industry and the applied sciences in general, can use numerical methods even more effectively.
