Role

Chairholder since 2013

Summary

The objective of the NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in Advanced Materials, based at COALIA at Cégep de Thetford, is to manufacture nanocomposite materials on an industrial scale. The Chair program aims to control the morphological organization of these materials on the nanometric scale through the manufacturing process and the control of interfaces. The nanocomposite approach gives materials remarkable properties that can be used in industrial applications and thus generate new products. Due to the size and nature of the materials used, managing nanometric organization on an industrial scale is an ambitious goal. The outcome’s success depends on COALIA's expertise in the implementation of plastics and mineral products and on the experience of the chairholder in issues concerning industrial innovation. Teaching staff and students involved in the Chair facilitate the transfer of knowledge in the fields of technological materials and nanomaterials and contribute to improving the accessibility of nanomaterials. The objective of the Chair is to translate scientific advances in these fields into industrial products by supporting Canadian companies in their technology shifts.

The research is conducted according to the specific needs of the two industrial partners and to their will to work together and focus their efforts to strengthen their innovation capacity. With CelluForce as a partner, the chairholder will design new nanocrystalline cellulose-based nanocomposite materials using industrial implementation processes, which will enable him to validate the manufacturing competitiveness while also enabling him to showcase the competitive advantages of this type of nanocomposite material. With SiliCycle as a partner, the chairholder will develop polymeric supports for separation and will manufacture them at an industrial scale, which will broaden the partner’s range of products and their share of the market. Lastly, the Chair will enable CelluForce and SiliCycle to benefit from their respective networks to develop the first commercial manufacturing system of enantiomer separation products using a silica-based reproduction of the chiral structure of nanocrystalline cellulose.

Chairholder Philippe Bébin has over 10 years of experience in the development of advanced materials. He has worked in various centres of applied research and technology transfer and in technology companies. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Université Laval and specializes in the surfaces and interfaces of antagonistic materials. He has a solid understanding of issues related to industrial innovation and a strong expertise in technology transfer.
