Jozsef Kövecses has partnered with Montreal-based CM Labs Simulations to develop the mathematical models that make computer simulations act and feel lifelike. Kövecses and his team create physics- based modeling algorithms that reproduce in virtual environments details like load, cable tension, and fast mechanical movement. CM Labs’ simulators are used around the world and include applications such as deep sea exploration, surgical training, and off-road vehicle simulation.
Arnold | CM Labs develops two main lines of business. The first is a simulation-based training solution. The second is a simulation and visualization software called Vortex Studio. Our clients are looking to simulate more and more complex machines in very realistic environments. |

Marek | Jozsef's group has provided some fundamental breakthroughs which allow us to perform simulations beyond anything that was possible before. |
Jozsef | We are studying the behaviour of moving physical objects, their interactions. So here we can use some very fundamental concepts to directly address practical applications. What we see in everyday life, it sometimes comes naturally to us, but characterizing and describing this in a more exact way with mathematical models present many, many challenges. |
Arnold | The work we've done with McGill allows us to deliver higher performance and improved accuracy in our simulation. |
Marek | Our ultimate goal is to enable engineering clients to build better products through the use of simulations, and our training clients to provide the best possible training. Students enjoy the fact that the results of the research is actually applied in a real context, and is actually used by clients. |
Jozsef | There's a very close relationship, what we do as academic research and what CM Labs is doing in their – in their business. And in fact, it's a great benefit to our entire research team, this interaction, this flow of ideas that happens in two directions, from the company to us as academic researchers, and from us to the – to the company. |
