NSERC Launches Science Odyssey

From Friday, May 6 to Sunday, May 15, 2016, Canadians across the country took part in Science Odyssey, a ten-day national celebration of science and technology. The event was a huge success, involving 350 partners hosting over 600 events in 220 locations.

NSERC Awards for Science Promotion Announced

The NSERC Awards for Science Promotion honour individuals and groups who make outstanding contributions to the promotion of science and engineering to the general public. This year’s recipients are Colonel Chris Hadfield, one of Canada’s most accomplished astronauts, and Elephant Thoughts Educational Outreach, Canada's largest science outreach program. Congratulations to our awardees!

PromoScience Funding Awarded to Science Outreach Organizations

On May 6, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, along with NSERC President Dr. B Mario Pinto, announced $4.8 million for 43 recipients through NSERC’s PromoScience Program. PromoScience provides funding to programs and organizations to support youth engagement in science.

New Funding for Science in Budget 2016

On March 22, This link will take you to another Web site Budget 2016, Growing the Middle Class, was tabled in the House of Commons. Budget 2016 proposes to provide an additional $95 million per year, starting in 2016–17, on an ongoing basis to the granting councils. Of this total, $30 million annually is proposed for NSERC.

CREATE Program Funds Innovative Training Projects

On April 14, 2016, NSERC announced $21.4 million in funding for 13 new projects under the Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program. This year's CREATE teams cover a wide variety of research areas, including hybrid electric cars, aerospace and planetary science, optics, computer gaming and more.

NSERC Announces Review of Discovery Funding Allocation

NSERC is launching a review of how new Discovery research funds are allocated among the various natural sciences and engineering disciplines in Canada. An international Advisory Committee will provide advice and recommendations to NSERC on the principles to be used in guiding allocation decisions.

NSERC and Mitacs Join Forces

NSERC is pleased to collaborate with Mitacs on joint applications that support projects eligible for the Collaborative Research and Development Grant (CRD) or Engage grant and for a Mitacs Accelerate internship.

NSERC CREATE applicants are also encouraged to take advantage of Mitacs programs that support internships in industry to increase the number of trainees in their proposals.

Changes to NSERC Policies for New Primary Caregivers

NSERC is pleased to announce a new pilot option as part of its maternity and parental leave policy. Under this option, holders of a Discovery Grant or Discovery Development Grant may extend the duration of their funding when they become eligible for leave but decline it.

New Development for Strategic Partnership Grants for Projects

As a result of extensive consultations with the community on NSERC 2020, NSERC will be adding a Letter of Intent (LOI) phase to the application process for the Strategic Partnership Grants for Projects, starting with the 2017 competition cycle.

NSERC is currently developing the necessary framework for a fall launch of the LOI process for the 2017 competition. Please refer to NSERC’s website periodically for updates.

Responsible Conduct of Research Framework: Consultation Comments Posted

The Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research held its first consultation on proposed changes to the Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR Framework) from January 8, 2016 to April 8, 2016. Twenty-four sets of consultation comments have been posted online to promote the transparency of this public engagement process.

6th Global Research Council Annual Meeting

The 6th Global Research Council Annual Meeting will be held in Ottawa from May 29 to 31, 2017, and will bring together close to 70 heads of science and engineering granting agencies from around the world. Gender Summit North America 2017

From November 6 to the 8, 2017, Montréal will welcome the Gender Summit North America 2017, coinciding with the city’s This link will take you to another Web site 375th anniversary. NSERC is organizing this international event in partnership with the This link will take you to another Web site Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies, Santé and This link will take you to another Web site Société et culture (In French only). The Summit will gather close to 600 advocates of gender equality who will discuss the theme of "Pluralism, Ethnicity & Inclusion – Canadian Values in a Global Context."

Congratulations to the Winners of the Science, Action! Video Contest

The public has voted, the judges’ scores have been tallied and the results are in. The 15 winners of NSERC’s Science, Action! video contest have been revealed.

We encourage students to film their research activities over the summer in preparation for the third installment of the Science, Action! video contest being planned for early 2017.

NSERC Scholars to Attend the 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting

Three outstanding NSERC supported researchers will be among the 400 aspiring young researchers from around the world who will spend a week with 30 Nobel Laureates at the 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting in Germany from June 26 to July 1, 2016.
