Announcement for NSERC Strategic Partnership Grants for Networks

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, and the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced nearly $22 million in new funding for four research networks that encourage industrial partnerships. Scientists and business leaders will join together in these networks to tackle pressing challenges like targeting pollution, exploring enhanced manufacturing technology, developing sustainable natural resource extraction methods and modernizing the stewardship of Canadian lakes.

The Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, the Honourable MaryAnn Mihychuk, on behalf of Minister of Science, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, announced more than $36 million in new funding for 32 research projects at colleges and CÉGEPs across Canada to support applied research and development activities with Canadian businesses. NSERC’s CCI program helps strengthen research links between colleges, CÉGEPs and businesses to accelerate the development of promising technologies and promote their commercialization.

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan announced over $465 million for more than 4,000 awards that are the result of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) 2016 competition for the discovery research programs. The programs, which include funds for scholarships, fellowships, research supplements and equipment grants, support researchers and students who are furthering our understanding of the world and how it works.

Science Odyssey Appreciation Event and NSERC Award for Science Promotion (Group Category) Announcement

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Dr. B. Mario Pinto hosted 11 Science-Based outreach groups at the Science Odyssey Appreciation event which was held in Ottawa on May 12. The event was attended by students, researchers, and science promoters. Guests were invited to explore the room and discover robots, interactive activities and a 12 foot high inflated Coho Salmon.
As well, Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, presented the NSERC award for Science Promotion (Group) to Elephant Thoughts Educational Outreach.
Science Odyssey, from May 6 to 15, was 10 days of discovery and innovation features hundreds of events where Canadians experienced this country's richness in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, announced $4.8 million in awards on May 6, 2016, for 43 recipients to be supported by the PromoScience Program, which enables science outreach across Canada.
Minister Duncan, along with Dr. B. Mario Pinto, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), made the announcement at the start of Science Odyssey, a 10-day national celebration of science-based activities and events across Canada.

Government of Canada announces a $21.4 million investment for training of science and engineering graduates for jobs

Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows looking to combine technical research training with professional workplace-oriented skills received a boost today, with new funding announced by Greg Fergus, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, on behalf of the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science.
The funding comes from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) through its Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) initiative. CREATE projects, including the 13 new ones, support training environments that allow young researchers to make the transition from trainees to productive employees. Courses emphasize professional skills development to complement collaborative and integrative research environments and internships with potential employers.

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, today presented Colonel Chris Hadfield, one of Canada’s most accomplished astronauts, with this year’s NSERC Award for Science Promotion (Individual). The annual Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) award, valued at $10,000, honours individuals who make outstanding contributions to the promotion of science and engineering to the general public.

Building a model of the brain – NSERC-RCI Lecture with Dr. Chris Eliasmith

Dr. Chris Eliasmith presented a public talk on how researchers use computational and theoretical models of the brain to study human and animal behaviour, and how it’s affected by disease or drugs. Eliasmith leads a team that has built the world’s largest functional model.
Dr. Chris Eliasmith, who is Canada Research Chair in Theoretical Neuroscience at the University of Waterloo, is the recipient of the NSERC John C. Polanyi Award, which is given for outstanding recent advances in the natural sciences or engineering.

Ground-breaking research to develop next generation clean technologies is now possible thanks to a $4 million investment announced on January 8th by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science. The funding, through the Discovery Frontiers initiative of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, goes to a Canada-wide team led by Dr. Gregory Jerkiewicz of Queen’s University.
