Improved access to paid parental leave for grant-funded students and fellows

The three research granting agencies in Canada, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) have agreed to harmonize and update their existing paid parental leave policy. Starting July 31, 2017, eligible students and fellows can apply for agency paid parental leave, even if they receive other parental leave support such as employment insurance or supplements from other sources. Previously, NSERC only offered supplements to students and fellows who were not eligible for any kind of paid parental leave supplements.
