Anas El-Aneed

Anas El-Aneed (Ph.D. Biochemistry (2007) & M.Sc. Pharmacy (2003), Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada; M.B.A. (2012), University of Saskatchewan, Canada; and B.Sc. Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (1997), Tishreen University, Syria) is a Professor and Assistant Dean of Pharmacy at the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He joined the University of Saskatchewan in 2008. He is also currently the Research Group Lead for the Drug Discovery and Development Research Group in Health Sciences, University of Saskatchewan. Previously, Dr. El-Aneed worked as a pharmacy research specialist at the Newfoundland and Labrador Center for Health Information, Canada (2006-2007).

Dr. El-Aneed’s research relies on the use of different mass spectrometry platforms for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of small organic compounds. His current research is focused on urine biomarker discovery for respiratory illnesses, extracting active metabolites form canola waste streams, identifying novel cannabinoids and their metabolites, and developing novel MALDI-MS matrices. In addition to basic science, Dr. El-Aneed was engaged in applied health research, investigating the educational needs of community pharmacists regarding substance misuse. In 2007, he was awarded the Governor General Gold medal for his Ph.D. thesis. Over his career, he has authored and coauthored over 70 publications, and contributed to over 150 conference abstracts and published conference proceedings. He has supervised/co-supervised 36 trainees and research staff to-date. He received several national, provincial, and internal University of Saskatchewan grants.

He is also on the editorial board of Rapid Communication in Mass Spectrometry, and a member of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the Canadian Society for Mass Spectrometry. He was the co-chair of the Saskatchewan Mass Spectrometry User Group (2010-2018). Dr. El-Aneed has served on several college, university, and professional committees.
