Brian D. Fisher

Dr. Brian Fisher (Ph.D. Experimental Psychology, University of California at Santa Cruz; B.A. Biology, Hiram College) is a Professor in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) at Simon Fraser University. He is also an Affiliate Professor in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Fisher’s work has had an impact within the fields of technology, design, and business. His research focuses on the cognitive science of human interaction with visual information systems, with the goal of developing new theories, research methods, and integrative design methodologies for information systems that better support human understanding, decision-making, and operations management. His publications are in cognitive science, cognitive engineering, and visual analytics fields, as well as application areas such as aircraft safety, public health, and emergency management. Dr. Fisher is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (IEEE-VGTC) Visualization Pioneer and Fellow of the Psychonomics Society. He has received numerous awards, including: the 2010 IEEE-VGTC Distinguished Achievement Award, and the 2012 International Association for Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management Distinguished Achievement Award.

Currently, Dr. Fisher serves as a member of EUREKA/European Commission Expert Panel in Entrepreneurship, the Executive Committee of the IEEE Conference on Scientific Visualization, Information Visualization and Visual Analytics (VIS), and the steering committee for IEEE Conference on Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST). He was Paper Chair for VAST 2017 and will serve as General Chair for VIS 2019 in Vancouver.
