Governance Framework

NSERC’s Council is composed of the President and up to 18 other distinguished members selected from the private and public sectors, and appointed by the Government of Canada. The President of NSERC is the Chief Executive Officer, and the elected Vice-President chairs the Council and its Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee of the Council exercises the functions of the Council between Council meetings and acts as a governance, human resources, risk management and oversight committee.

The Council’s standing and advisory committees are:

  • Committee on Discovery Research
  • Committee on Research Partnerships
  • Committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Grants and scholarships are awarded through a competitive peer review process that involves hundreds of volunteers who meet in selection committees to make decisions.
