KidsCode Jeunesse provides a fun and easy way for kids to learn basic coding
KidsCode Jeunesse uses fun and engaging tools to give K-12 students a hands-on introduction to computer programming in classrooms and community centres. Volunteers work with teachers and parents, providing direction and resources to help them weave coding into their language, arts, math and technology curriculum.
Using free, open-source resources, children learn coding skills, create their own games and animations, and learn to build their own websites. Support from NSERC’s PromoScience program allowed organizers to develop the “About a Canadian Animal” project, in which students use coding skills to create an animation of an animal in its habitat. This project was made available for free online as part of the Science Odyssey celebrations, so that kids could try a fun coding project at home with their families or friends.
Since its formation in 2013, KidsCode Jeunesse has had a special focus on engaging young girls in coding and on promoting programming as a welcoming and inclusive field. Although most of their work is carried out in classrooms, they also offer workshops and presentations in libraries and through the Boys and Girls Club, where they can reach a mix of girls and boys and spread a love of coding throughout communities.
